Need Real Power? The John Deere 420 Garden Tractor
If the 318 is the “Jack of all trades,” the John Deere 420 is the “King of the Hill.” Built between 1983 and 1991, this was the largest of the 400-series garden tractors before moving into the diesel 430 territory.

History: The 420 was designed for large estates and light commercial work. With a longer wheelbase and a wider stance than the 300-series, it could handle massive 60-inch mower decks and heavy-duty loaders without breaking a sweat.
Specifications:
- Engine: 20 HP Onan B48G or P220G twin-cylinder.
- Transmission: Two-speed hydrostatic (High/Low range).
- Hydraulics: Triple hydraulics (H3) for maximum attachment control.
- Rear End: Locking differential for extra traction in the mud or snow.
The Salvage Perspective: The 420 is a beast, but its Onan engine and unique 2-speed transaxle parts can be expensive to buy new. Fulton Mower Salvage carries a deep stock of 400-series driveline parts and hydraulic valves to keep your heavyweight working.
